1. PANCHAKARMA


Traditional medicine has a holistic approach i.e., viewing man in his totality within a wide ecological spectrum and of emphasizing the viewpoint thatill-health or disease is brought about not only by the causative agent and of pathogenic evolution, but also by an imbalance or disequilibrium of man in his total ecological system.

Ayurveda, the basic science of life is the knowledge that describes or indicates the four stages of life, the appropriate and inappropriate, happy and sorrowful conditions along with what is good and bad for longevity as well as measurement of life itself.

Ayurveda is completely based on the ‘Theory of Pancha mahabuta' and aim for equilibrium between the influences of the five elements on the five senses of body.

Panchakarma is a special offshoot of Ayurveda that deals with healing. In this system of medicine, to maintain positive health and to be free from any disease, the special line of treatment adopted right from good olden days, dates back to 5000 B.C., is Panchakarma therapy. It is designed to achieve the greater efficiency in treating a disease as well as of medicines and diet.

Panchakarmas are the therapeutic means of eliminating toxins from the body. It is a series of five therapies or steps that help in removing deep rooted impurities from the physiology while balancing the doshas- those humors or forces that govern all the biological function. These five basic cleansing procedures are named as “Shodhana chikitsa”. They go as:

Vamana (Emesis)

A medicated emesis therapy, cleanses Kapha collected in the body and decongests the respiratory tract. Effective in Kapha predominant diseases, like bronchitis, asthma, severe skin diseases (psoriasis, urticaria, eczema etc.), allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, various psychological disorders etc.

Virechana (Purgation)

A medicated purgation therapy, removes toxins from the body that are accumulated in the gastro-intestinal tract. Effective in treating chronic fever, diabetes, asthma, skin disorders, paraplegia, hemiplegia, joint disorders, digestive disorders, constipation, hyperacidity, psoriasis, headache, elephantiasis and gynecological disorders.

Basti
(Medicated Enema)

Cleanses the accumulated toxins from all over the body. Basti is also highly beneficial in rejuvenating treatment; especially in convalescence. It is effective in vata conditions like neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders, sexual debility, infertility and other associated conditions.

Nasyam
(Nasal Insufflation)

Cleanses accumulated Kapha dosha from the head and neck region. Effective in treating urdhwajatrugata rogas (ENT & Eye disorders), trigeminal neuralgia, facial palsy, paralysis, insomnia, pre-mature graying of hair, headache of various origin, frozen shoulder, stiffness of the neck, neurological dysfunctions, sinusitis and also improves memory & eye sight.
Raktamokshana (Blood letting)

Effective in haemopathological conditions, allergies, skin disorders, tonsillitis, sciatica etc.

(REJUVENATION THERAPY)

Kaya Kalpa Chikitsa is a progeny of Ayurveda, a holistic approach to science of healing. Kaya Kalpa has derived its name from the Sanskrit terms ‘Kaya' means ‘body' and ‘Kalpa' means ‘transformation' or ‘transmutation'.

The following are some of the procedures of Kaya Kalpa.

Abhyangam & Swedam

A whole body massage with specific herbal oils to nourish and revitalize the body tissues (Dhatus) and to allow the toxins to be removed from the body. Abhyanga has much deeper and far more reaching effects than an ordinary massage, that uses mineral oils and lotions. This massage is performed symmetrically by two therapists for one hour and is usually followed by medicated steam bath (Sweda). It is one of the most rejuvenating treatments of Ayurveda.
Benefits Increases tissue strength, improves blood circulation, rejuvenates the whole body, beautifies the skin, delays aging, induces sound sleep, promotes vitality, pacifies vata imbalance, reduces stress and removes toxins.

Shirodhara

A continuous stream of medicated warm oil/herbal decoctions/medicated milk/buttermilk is poured onto the forehead for 20-40 minutes in an oscillating manner. This procedure often induces a mental state similar to trance, which creates profound relaxation of the mind and body. It is deeply relaxing and revitalizes the central nervous system. Shirodhara gives the best results when taken after an Abhyanga.
Benefits Treats anxiety, depression, epilepsy, hypertension, diabetic neuropathy, central nervous system, hemiplegia paraplegia, strengthens the sensory organs, insomnia, pre-mature graying of hair & hair loss, mental retardation, paralysis, stress.

Sarvangadhara (Pizhichil) Kayaseka

Medicated oil/milk is poured onto the body in continuous streams while being gently massaged, for one hour. It is extremely soothing and relaxing. It acts as a free radical scavenger, toning, strengthening and deeply rejuvenating the whole body. It is applied after Abhyanga.

Benefits Increases ojus & body immunity, anti-aging & rejuvenating, alleviates the burning sensation in the body, ensures better blood circulation, helps to recover from paralysis, promotes healing of fractures.

Patra Pinda Sweda
(Elakkizhi)

A highly rejuvenating treatment, in which fresh plants are fried with several other herbal ingredients and tied into boluses, dipped in warm medicated oil and simultaneously massaged all over the body for one hour. It is applied after Abhyanga.

Benefits Treats chronic back pain, loss of function of a part or whole limb, joint stiffness and swelling, muscular pain, anti-ageing & rejuvenating, sciatica, spondylosis, sprains and cramps.

Sashtika Sali Pinda Sweda


(Navarakizhi)
Ahighly effective rejuvenation technique using a special type of rice that is cooked, tied into boluses and dipped into a herbal decoction and warm milk, then skillfully massaged simultaneously all over the body for one hour after the Abhyanga.Benefits Relief from paralytic strokes, anti-aging & rejuvenating, strengthens tissues,bodyache,emaciation, debility monoplegia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis.

Udvartana

This is a specialized herbal treatment for weight reduction. A herbal paste or powder is applied all over the body and deeply massaged with specific movements for one hour.Benefits Helps in toning the skin and muscles aids in obesity, weight reduction, imparts good complexion to skin, revitalizes the sense of touch, and removes Kapha, toxins from the body.

Other special treatments includes Bahya Basti, Netratarpana, Talapodichil (Sirolepana), Siropichu, etc.

Bahya Vasti

It is done keeping a certain amount of medicated luke warm oil on the specific area of body for a prescribed period of time. It is named according to part or organ on which therapy is decided.
Sirovasti (On the head) - Effective in treating facial palsy, trigeminal neuralgia, ottalgia, deafness, degenerative conditions of brain, parkinsonism etc.
Kadivasti (Lumbar region) - Effective in treating lumbar spondylosis, lumbago, sciatica, disc prolapse etc.
Greevavasti (Cervical region) - Effective in treating cervical spondylosis, brachialgia etc.
Januvasti (Knee joints) - Effective in treating Osteoarthritis etc.
Urovasti/Hridvasti (Cardiothoracic region) - Effective in treating hypertension, problems of ribs, tuberculosis etc.
Netravasti/Netra tarpanam (Eyes) - Effective in curing myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, cataract and other ophthalmic conditions
Chakravasti (Umbilicus) - Digestive disorders

Duration : 7-14 days, 30 to 45 minutes daily

Sirolepana

A procedure in which a paste of medicinal herbs/drugs is applied on the scalp for a specific period of time. It is effective in treating neurological disorders, mental diseases, hair fall, pre-mature graying, headache, migraine, neurodermatitis, scalp psoriasis, eczema etc.

Duration : 7 – 21days, 1 to 1 ½ hour daily
